This study provides an overview of five e-cigarette case samples seized from Scottish prisons between May 2022 and July 2023 where the anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) mestanolone and oxandrolone were identified following gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses. These e-cigarette samples
represented 2.9% of all samples containing e-cigarette cartridges (n = 170) and 9.4% of all samples found to contain AASs (n = 53) seized during the same time period. The AASs were detected in combination with other drugs, including cocaine, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), SCRAs and nicotine. This represents a new and novel route of administration for AASs.

Design: Cohort prospective study.
Setting: University ART program in Chile.
Patient(s): One hundred sixty-six couples seeking pregnancy through ART.
Intervention(s): Follicular fluid (FF) and serum cotinine concentrations were measured in female partners. Self-reported CS data were collected through personal interviews.
Main Outcome Measure(s): The association between female recent smoking, assessed by FF and serum cotinine concentrations, and ART outcomes, such as number of ova retrieved and implantation rates, and the association between self-reported male recent smoking and live birth rates.
Result(s): A significant age-adjusted association between increased FF cotinine level and decreased number of ova retrieved was found. The male partner’s smoking habit significantly decreased the live birth rate from 21.1% to 7.8%. Serum cotinine concentrations paralleled those of FF.
Conclusion(s): The hypothesis of a detrimental effect of recent female smoking over implantation rates is rejected. However, recent male smoking is associated with significantly decreased live birth rates even after adjusting for confounders. Female recent smoking was significantly associated with decreased number of retrieved ova.

Methods: The semen quality of 2 groups of patients with varicocele were compared, those who smoked (n = 121) and those who did not (n = 158). The semen parameters were evaluated, and sperm morphology was assessed using transmission electron microscopy and quantitatively elaborated (fertility index, immaturity, necrosis, and apoptosis percentages).
Results: In the smoker and nonsmoker varicocele-associated cases, sperm motility and the results from transmission electron microscopy analysis were significantly impaired compared with controls. However, a nonsignificant difference was detected when the semen parameters were compared. Subsequently, we divided the patients into 4 groups: mild (> or = 1 but < or = 10 cigarettes/d), moderate (>10 but <20 cigarettes/d), and heavy (> or = 20 cigarettes/d) smokers and a group of randomly chosen nonsmoker patients with varicocele. The sperm motility, sperm concentration, and fertility index decreased and the percentage of sperm pathologic features increased as the number of cigarettes smoked daily increased.
Conclusions: A detrimental effect of cigarette smoking (>10 cigarettes/d) associated with varicocele on sperm motility and morphology was observed. Because much of reduced fecundity associated with smoking may be reversed within 1 year of cessation, as reported in published studies, effective interventions targeted at helping patients quit smoking should be addressed for the benefit of general health and fertility.

Toxic habits and their relationship with male factor infertility have been a matter of investigation in recent years, and smoking is one of the most common lifestyle toxic exposures to harmful substances. The analysis of sperm deoxyribonucleic acid fragmentation after capacitation detected a detrimental effect produced by tobacco, and this deleterious effect alters the sperm swim-up selection process in smokers, although the molecular and cellular basis of this phenomenon remain to be elucidated.

[TABAC] tabagisme:risqueMots-clés : e-liquide, expérimentation, mécanique, physique Index. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : Electronic cigarettes were developed to vaporise an e-liquid containing nicotine. In addition to chemical composition, health and safety risks are associated with the power supply. The aim of this study was to determine the functioning limits using boiling correlations for the onset of nucleate boiling and critical-heat flux. These estimations are in contrast with the experimentally obtained values. To achieve this, forty-six atomisers were used and filled with a standardized e-liquid. The emissions were generated by supplying different power ratings, starting with a low power, which was increased for each new experiment until a malfunction occurred. The influence is characterised by the mass of the vaporised e-liquid (mass difference of the atomiser before and after the experiment). The results showed good agreement (33% and 19% in absolute deviations, 14% and -1% in relative deviations) between the boiling correlations (Sato and Matsumara, Zuber) and the functional limit of an E-cigarette. This link establishes how an E-cigarette is controlled through boiling. Determining the functional curve of a device should be a standardised requirement to show its physical limitations and would be a major contributor to reducing the risk of device use. [TABAC] tabagisme:risque:facteur associé:génétiqueIndex. décimale : TA 3.2.2.7 Grossesse et fœtus Résumé : Objective: To analyze the distribution of benzo(a)pyrene-diol-epoxide (BPDE)–DNA adducts in spermatozoa selected and nonselected by a swim-up procedure with relation to smoking habits.
Design: Comparative study.
Setting: Public university and public university hospital.
Patient(s): Seventy-nine men (37 smokers and 42 nonsmokers) who visited an infertility clinic for diagnostic.
Intervention(s) :Tobacco and environmental exposure assessment, semen sample analysis, swim-up procedure, BPDE-DNA adduct immunolabeling.
Main Outcome Measure(s):
BPDE-DNA adduct quantification in selected (SEL-SPZ) and nonselected (NONSEL-SPZ) spermatozoa. Data were normalized by using a normalized fluorescence value (NFV).
Result(s) :
The mean NFV (±SD) in SEL-SPZ was significantly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers (18.9 ± 11.5 vs. 10.5 ± 10.4, respectively). Within smokers, a paired analysis (SEL-SPZ and NONSEL-SPZ) showed that NFV was significantly lower in SEL-SPZ than in NONSEL-SPZ (20.0 ± 11.3 vs. 31.5 ± 16.0, respectively). Conversely, within nonsmokers, the mean NFV was higher in SEL-SPZ than in NONSEL-SPZ (10.3 ± 10.6 vs 4.3 ± 7.1, respectively).
Conclusion(s) :
Tobacco consumption is associated with BPDE-DNA adducts in spermatozoa. In smokers, semen processing by swim-up recovers potentially fertilizing spermatozoa that show a significantly lower amount of BPDE-DNA adducts compared with NONSEL-SPZ. Further study is needed to improve the spermatozoa selection in smoking patients requiring assisted reproductive technologies.

Résumé : More brands are using tobacco-free nicotine (TFN) in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and these products are becoming increasingly popular. The term TFN and claims about its properties can mislead consumers about the harms and addictiveness of TFN e-cigarettes, which may increase initiation of these products among non-smokers or influence current smokers’decisions to adopt TFN e-cigarettes as a harm reduction measure.
Methods
We conducted an observational, cross-sectional survey of 777 adolesc aged 13 to 17 and 655 current adult cigarette smokers residing in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont about their TFN e-cigarette awareness, use, perceptions, and susceptibility. We examined the association between prior awareness of TFN and use, perceptions, and susceptibility.
Results
One-third of adolescents and adults reported being aware of TFN. TFN e-cigarette use was less common than tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) e-cigarette use among adolescents (8.9%vs. 30.5%) and adults (21.1% vs. 79.4%). Compared to unaware adolescents, adolescents who were aware of TFN more frequently reported being more likely to use TFN compared to TDN ecigarettes and that TFN e-cigarettes are more addictive than those containing TDN.
