However, vapor still contains substances that are classified as toxic to humans. Short-term exposure to vapors from liquids can induce an inflammatory response in the lungs and cause oxidative stress. This study aimed to determine the effects of e-cigarette vapor smoke on pulmonary alveoli in Rattus norvegicus lungs.
Methods: This was an experimental study on 32 adult male Rattus norvegicus rats. They were divided into two groups exposed to nicotine-containing vapor smoke two times a day for one and three months, respectively, and one group as control. After vapor exposure, the lung tissues of the rats were taken and then subjected to histopathological examination under a microscope.
Results: After exposure for one month, epithelial and endothelial cells degenerated, characterized by a decrease in collagen and elastin fibers in the extracellular matrix. For three months, there were changes, the alveolar membrane had no nucleus, the surrounding endothelial cells were not visible due to damage to the extracellular matrix, the alveolar lumen had widened, causing edema in the lumen of the alveoli, and the alveoli wall was destroyed. Therefore, the connection between the alveoli was stretched.
Conclusion: This study found that short-term exposure to nicotine vapor causes damage to the alveoli membrane.

There are several substances contained in electronic cigarette liquid that have carcinogenic effects. These substances can also increase free radicals which in turn can cause oxidative stress. Nicotine, propylene glycol, and glycerin can cause disturbances in male reproductive function. Infertility can occur due to lifestyle factors, one of which is smoking. Nicotine found in cigarettes can reduce sperm quality, including concentration, mobility, viability, and sperm morphology. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of electronic cigarettes on sperm quality. The research method uses a literature review system. The twelve studies that are in accordance with the topic of discussion are experimental studies on mice and rats, two studies on human, and one study on both human and rats. Five journals showed a significant decrease in sperm count and testosterone serum level, three other journals showed a significant decrease in sperm morphology and viability, six journals showed a decrease in sperm motility, seven journals showed a significant impairment of testis histological structure, four journals showed a decrease of steroidogenesis enzymes, and one journal showed a significant increase of DNA fragmentation due to the use of electronic cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes had an effect on sperm quality. The prevalence of e-cigarette use continues to increase, especially among students. Objective: This study aims to identify factors that encourage the use of e cigarettes among junior high school students in Yogyakarta City. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional survey approach with a sample size of 582 taken using a proportional stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, including respondent characteristics (gender, and age) as well as predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors for e-cigarette use. Data were analyzed using a chi-square test for bivariate analysis and a logistic regression test for multivariate analysis. Results: The results showed that knowledge (RP=4.06, CI 95%=1.60-10.3, p<0.05), affordability (RP=2.46, CI 95%=1.37-4.39, p<0.05), family members smoking (RP=3.14, CI 95%=1.62-6.09, p<0.05), peers smoking (RP=8.14, CI 95%=3.92-16.9, p<0.05) were associated with the use of e-cigarettes in students. Meanwhile, the availability of cigarettes is not significant with the use of e-cigarettes in students (RP=1.98, CI 95%=0.96-4.09, p>0.05). The results of multivariate analysis showed that the most influential factor in the use of e-cigarettes was peer smoking behavior. Conclusion: There is a relationship between knowledge, affordability, smoking family members, and smoking peers with the use of e-cigarettes in students. Health promotion programs on the dangers of e-cigarette use and how to avoid them should be implemented, as well as restrictions on access to e-cigarettes through the implementation of smoke-free areas in schools.
