They use E-cigarettes as an alternative to smoking cigarettes or tobacco. Teenagers believe that smoking helps relieve tension from a long day of work as a part of their way of life. The purpose of this study was to determine and assess the awareness on the harmful effects of E-cigarette smoking among the users in 4 barangays in Echague, Isabela. The study used a quantitative design and used snowball sampling type of research design to determine the respondent’s awareness on the harmful effects of E-cigarettes. Demographic data and 4point Likert-scale type items were used to gather needed information. Data was collected by online surveys using Google Forms and face- to-face surveys utilizing printed questionnaires and were analyzed using Pearson correlation. The findings indicated that the majority of respondents were males, their length of use is 2 years. Most of them are 21 years old and are undergraduate. The findings show that the respondents are slightly aware of the harmful effects of using E-cigarette. Concerning to their physical health that can cause a lot of diseases such as cancer, pulmonary diseases, brain damage, cardiovascular disease, and sexual and reproductive dysfunction. It can be inferred that respondents are slightly aware of how using E-cigarettes has influenced their everyday activities and finances. In terms of their social lives, this study also reveals that the participants are only slightly aware that using e-cigarettes can cause harm to others. Population-level health outcomes associated with e-cigarettes depend in part on the association between e-cigarettes and combustible cigarette cessation. The US Food and Drug Administration has authority to regulate e-cigarette characteristics, including flavor and device type.
OBJECTIVE
To investigate whether e-cigarette characteristics are associated with cigarette cessation behaviors among adults in the US population who use e-cigarettes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS
This cohort study was conducted using longitudinal data collected in 2014 to 2021 by the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study, a population based, US nationally representative study. Participants were sampled from the civilian noninstitutionalized population using a 4-staged, stratified sampling design. Data were weighted and analyzed from 1985 adults ages 21 or older who smoked cigarettes daily and had used e-cigarettes in the past 30 days. Data were analyzed in May 2021 to May 2024.
EXPOSURES
The following e-cigarette characteristics were assessed: use frequency (daily and nondaily), flavor type (tobacco, menthol or mint, sweet, and combination), device type (disposable, cartridge, and tank), and year of data collection as a proxy for the evolving e-cigarette marketplace.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES
The following cigarette cessation behaviors were assessed: making a cigarette quit attempt, cigarette cessation among individuals who made a quit attempt, and overall cigarette discontinuation regardless of quit attempts. Associations were evaluated between e-cigarette characteristics (assessed at baseline in 1 approach and assessed at follow-up in another approach) and cigarette cessation outcomes, controlling for demographic, cigarette smoking, and other e-cigarette use characteristics.
RESULTS
The study sample consisted of 1985 participants representing adults in the population (mean age, 40.0 years [95% CI, 39.2-40.9 years]; 49.4% [95% CI, 46.3%-52.6%] male; 11.4% [95% CI, 9.6%-13.4%] Black, 80.7% [95% CI, 77.8%-83.3%] White, and 8.0% [95% CI, 6.3%-10.0%] other race; 9.2% [95% CI, 7.5%-11.2%] Hispanic). Daily vs nondaily e-cigarette use was associated with greater overall cigarette discontinuation rates (12.8% [95% CI, 9.1%-17.7%] vs 6.1% [95% CI, 4.8%- 7.7%]; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.26 [95% CI, 1.34-3.81]), and use of e-cigarettes in 2019 to 2021 vs 2014-2015 to 2015-2016 was also associated with greater overall cigarette discontinuation rates (12.0% [95% CI, 8.8%-16.0%] vs 5.3% [95% CI, 2.9%-9.3%]; aOR, 2.75 [95% CI, 1.13-6.67]). Use of menthol or mint vs tobacco flavor e-cigarettes was associated with greater overall cigarette discontinuation rates (9.2% [95% CI, 6.6%-12.8%] vs 4.7% [95% CI, 3.0%-7.1%]; aOR, 2.63 [95% CI, 1.32-5.27]) only when assessing e-cigarette use at baseline. E-cigarette device type was not associated with cigarette discontinuation rates in adjusted analyses.
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE
In this study, daily e-cigarette use and use of e-cigarettes in 2019 to 2021 were consistently associated with greater cigarette discontinuation rates. These findings suggest that research focused on e-cigarettes marketed in recent years is needed to inform product regulation and public health policy decisions.

[TABAC] tabagisme:risqueIndex. décimale : TA 1.3 Nicotine Résumé : IMPORTANCE Concerns have been raised about the abuse liability of modern e-cigarettes that use acidic additives to form nicotine salts, making the inhalation of nicotine smoother than freebase nicotine.
OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of nicotine form and concentration and e-liquid flavor on subjective effects ratings, vaping behavior, and nicotine uptake among young adults who use e-cigarettes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In this single-blind, within-participant, crossover randomized clinical trial, a convenience sample of young adults aged 21 to 25 years who currently used e-cigarettes was recruited from December 2021 to August 2023, for in-person research laboratory visits in Columbus, Ohio.
INTERVENTIONS Participants completed up to 9 vaping sessions, starting with their usual e-cigarette brand in the first session followed by 1 of 8 laboratory-prepared e-liquids in a randomly assigned order in each subsequent session. Prepared e-liquids varied by nicotine form (salt-based vs freebase), nicotine concentration (5% vs 1% weight per weight), and flavor (menthol vs tobacco). Each session included a 5-minute, 10-puff standardized vaping period followed by 30 minutes of ad libitum vaping.
MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES At 4 time points (0, 5, 10, and 35 minutes) during each vaping session, plasma samples were collected for assessing nicotine uptake, and self-reports of urges, craving, and withdrawal were collected via questionnaires. Positive subjective effects were self reported after 35 minutes of vaping using a visual analog scale; urges and cravings were reported using the Questionnaire of Smoking Urges (QSU). Puff topography data were collected throughout each vaping session.
RESULTS Seventy-two participants (mean [SD] age, 22.4 [1.4] years; 42 [58.3%] female) who sampled at least 1 laboratory-prepared e-liquid composed the analytic sample. Salt-based (vs freebase) nicotine e-liquids increased nicotine intake, with 5% salt-based e-liquids delivering the highest mean plasma levels of nicotine (11.2 ng/mL [95% CI, 9.3-13.2 ng/mL] at 5 minutes; 17.2 ng/mL [95% CI, 14.3-20.1 ng/mL] at 35 minutes) irrespective of flavors. Higher positive subjective effect ratings (eg, for liking) were received by salt-based (42.8; 95% CI, 39.4-46.1) vs freebase (32.0; 95% CI, 28.6-35.3) nicotine, 1% (43.4; 95% CI, 40.2-46.6) vs 5% (31.2; 95% CI, 27.7-34.6) nicotine, and menthol-flavored (43.2; 95% CI, 39.7-46.7) vs tobacco-flavored (31.5; 95% CI, 28.4-34.7) e-liquids. Salt-based and 1% but not menthol-flavored nicotine elicited more intense puffing (eg, 25% [95% CI 12%-40%] more total puffs for nicotine salts vs freebase). All study e-liquids reduced urges and cravings, with 5% vs 1% nicotine being more effective (mean [SE] QSU-Desire score at 35 minutes, 15.4 [0.5] vs 16.7 [0.5]).
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this crossover randomized clinical trial among young adult e-cigarette users, salt-based (vs freebase) nicotine e-liquids increased nicotine intake and yielded more positive subjective effects ratings and intense puffing behaviors, suggesting higher abuse potential. Restricting the level of acidic additives and menthol flavoring may reduce the addictiveness of e-cigarettes.

[TABAC] tabagisme:risqueIndex. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : Background
This systematic review aims to identify the benefts and harms of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) as a smoking cessation aid in adults (aged≥18 years) and to inform the development of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care’s (CTFPHC) clinical practice guidelines on e-cigarettes.
Methods
We searched Ovid MEDLINE®, Ovid MEDLINE® Epub Ahead of Print, In-Process & Other Non-Indexed Cita tions, PsycINFO, Embase Classic+Embase, and the Cochrane Library on Wiley. Searches were conducted from January 2016 to July 2019 and updated on 24 September 2020 and 25 January 2024. Two reviewers independently performed title-abstract and full-text screening according to the pre-determined inclusion criteria. Data extraction, quality assess ments, and the application of Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) were performed by one independent reviewer and verifed by another.
Results
We identifed 18 studies on 17 randomized controlled trials that compared e-cigarettes with nicotine to e-cigarettes without nicotine and e-cigarettes (with or without nicotine) to other interventions (i.e., no interven tion, waitlist, standard/usual care, quit advice, or behavioral support). Considering the benefts of e-cigarettes in terms of smoking abstinence and smoking frequency reduction, 14 studies showed small or moderate benefts of e-ciga rettes with or without nicotine compared to other interventions; although, with low, very low or moderate evidence certainty. With a focus on e-cigarettes with nicotine specifcally, 12 studies showed benefts in terms of smoking abstinence when compared with usual care or non-nicotine e-cigarettes. In terms of harms following nicotine or non nicotine e-cigarette use, 15 studies reported mild adverse events with little to no diference between groups and low to very low evidence certainty.
Conclusion
The evidence synthesis on the e-cigarette’s efectiveness shows data surrounding benefts having low to moderate evidence certainty for some comparisons and very low certainty for others, indicating that e-cigarettes may or probably increase smoking cessation, whereas, for harms, there is low to very low evidence certainty. Since the duration for outcome measurement varied among diferent studies, it may not be long-term enough for Adverse Events (AEs) to emerge, and there is a need for more research to understand the long-term benefts and potential harms of e-cigarettes.

[TABAC] tabagisme:risqueIndex. décimale : TA 6.10 Conséquences / effets à long-terme du sevrage Résumé : Background: Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of cancer, preventable death, and disability. Smoking cessation can increase life expectancy by nearly a decade if achieved in the third or fourth decades of life. Various stop smoking interventions are available including pharmacotherapies, electronic cigarettes, behavioural support, and alternative therapies. This protocol outlines an evidence review which will evaluate the benefits and harms of stop smoking interventions in adults.
Methods: The evidence review will consist of two stages. First, an overview of systematic reviews evaluating the benefits and harms of various stop smoking interventions delivered in or referred from the primary care setting will be conducted. The second stage will involve updating a systematic review on electronic cigarettes identified in the overview; randomized controlled trials will be considered for outcomes relating to benefits while randomized controlled trials, non-randomized controlled trials, and comparative observational studies will be considered for evaluating harms. Search strategies will be developed and peer-reviewed by medical information specialists. The search strategy for the updated review on e-cigarettes will be developed using that of the candidate systematic review. The MEDLINE®, PsycINFO, Embase, and the Cochrane Library electronic databases will be searched as of 2008 for the overview of reviews and from the last search date of the selected review for the updated review. Organizational websites and trial registries will be searched for unpublished or ongoing reviews/studies. Two reviewers will independently screen the title and abstracts of citations using the liberal accelerated method. Full-text screening will be performed independently by two reviewers. Extracted data will be verified by a second reviewer. Disagreements regarding full-text screening and data extraction will be resolved by consensus or third-party adjudication. The methodological quality of systematic reviews, risk of bias of randomized and non-randomized trials, and methodological quality of cohort studies will be evaluated using AMSTAR 2, the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and a modified version of the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network critical appraisal tool, respectively. The GRADE framework will be used to assess the quality of the evidence for outcomes.
Discussion: The evidence review will evaluate the benefits and harms of various stop smoking interventions for adults. Findings will be used to inform a national tobacco cessation guideline by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.

Résumé : Although the current data are scarce and fragmentary, the misuse of electronic cigarette devices (ENDSs) for smoking illicit drugs poses a serious emergent threat to public health. This review emphasises the use of ENDSs as new tools for smoking illicit drugs. A comprehensive search using the terms “illicit drugs”, “vape”, and “electronic cigarettes” was con ducted in PubMed, web-based drug forums, chat sites and grey literature combined with the terms tobacco, nicotine, smoking, cigarettes, cannabis, marijuana, opiate, opioid, heroin, cocaine, synthetic opioids/cannabinoids, cathinones, LSD, dimethyltryptamine (DMT), 3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), methamphetamine (Meth), vape/vaping, e-liquid and addiction.
Studies were included if they met the following criteria:
1) involved human participants (Female, male, intersex);
2) consumed any type of illicit drug using electronic cigarette;
3) all ages were taken into consideration. We used all combinations of search terms from each category for articles published between January 2013 and October 2023 a long period due to the fact that in the last years ENDS cigarettes have undergone improvements in their structure having the ability to regulate the evaporation temperature and facilitate the potential for use of these devices to ‘vape’ illicit drugs. In addition to nicotine, the main vaped drugs were cannabis, cocaine and new psychoactive substances (NPSs), which included synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic opioids, hallucinogens and stimulant drugs. An increase in the risk of overdose and death with the use of NPSs is reported. Further work is urgently needed for a better understanding on the efect of vaping illicit drugs in the population. It is confrmed that ENDSs are becoming popular devices among both young and older individuals, with a mean age of use of 46.26±16.8 years, as a new way of taking illicit drugs.

Résumé : Limited research has investigated the impact of e-cigarette advertising and reviews on the progression of e-cigarette use among young adults in the US. This study utilized five-wave longitudinal data (2018–2020) with 3006 young adults aged 18–34, reporting exposure to e-cigarette advertisements or reviews atWave 1 (W1) and W3. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine the prospective associations between frequent exposure to e-cigarette advertisements or reviews and e-cigarette use progression in four groups: never users (n = 1271 at W1), former users (previously used but quit ≥ 6 months ago, n = 422 at W1), recent former users (used in the past 6 months but not in the past month, n = 186 at W1), and current users (used in the past month, n = 1127 at W1). Among baseline former users, frequent exposure to e-cigarette reviews was associated with current use at 6-month follow-up (aOR = 4.40, 95%CI = 1.46–13.29). Among
baseline current users, frequent exposure to e-cigarette reviews was associated with increased days of use at 6-month follow-up (IRR = 1.20, 95%CI = 1.07–1.34) and 12-month follow-up (IRR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.03–1.35). E-cigarette reviews may contribute to relapse among recent former users and increased usage frequency among current users, highlighting the need for enhanced e-cigarette promotional activity regulation.

Social media platforms are promising to provide smoking cessation support. This study aimed to identify baseline factors associated with cigarette smoking abstinence among young adult smokers enrolled in a real-world social media-based smoking cessation program.
Aims and Methods:
We analyzed data from young adult smokers (aged 18–30 years) participating in a publicly available Facebook-based smoking cessation program serving the San Francisco Bay Area. The analytic sample consisted of 248 participants who completed both the baseline and follow-up surveys at 3 months. Multivariable logistic regression analysis determined baseline factors significantly associated with self-reported 7-day cigarette smoking abstinence at 3 months.
Results:
Participants were race/ethnically diverse, well-educated, and 47.6% reported LGB + sexual identity. Those who reported dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the past 30 days (vs. cigarette use only), current alcohol users (vs. non-users), and those aged 25–30 years (vs.18–24 years) were significantly less likely to report 7-day abstinence at 3 months. Non-daily smokers (vs. daily smokers) and those with high desire to quit smoking (vs. low to moderate desire) were more likely to report abstinence. Results also showed reduction in the percentage of e-cigarette and other tobacco product use among participants.
Conclusions:
Social media interventions may be more effective for young adult non-daily smokers and those with high desire to quit smoking. Smoking cessation programs may help reduce use of other tobacco products among treatment-seeking smokers. Smoking cessation interventions for young adults need to explicitly address dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes and use of alcohol.
Implications:
Findings of this study highlight the need for future interventions to address dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes and use of alcohol to improve cigarette smoking abstinence outcomes. The reduction in the use of other tobacco products among program participants indicates that social media smoking cessation programs may exert a broader positive influence on overall tobacco consumption. The large number of LGB+ smokers participating in the program suggests social media is a promising cessation channel for this hard-to-reach group, warranting further study.

ethnieIndex. décimale : TA 4.1.1 Facteurs prédictifs du tabagisme (génétique inclus) Résumé : Background: The age at which the individual begins smoking may influence the health of smokers at an older age. Cultural and social factors effect the age of smoking initiation.
Methods: A cross-sectional national survey of a random sample of 6,021 Israeli residents over the age of 21 were interviewed by telephone. The sample consisted of 4248 Jews, 858 Arabs and 915 immigrants, 856 of them were from the former Soviet Union.
Results: Compared to the Jewish population the Jews who immigrated from the former Soviet Union began smoking at an earlier age and the Arabs started smoking at an older age. The young respondents in all ethnic groups reported starting to smoke at a younger age compared to the older respondents, and there was a decrease in smoking initiation at an older age. Father smoking during childhood predicted earlier age of smoking initiation but not mother or sibling smoking, significantly among Jews and immigrants and non-significantly among Arabs.
Conclusions: Age of smoking initiation is dependent on the ethnic background in which the smokers grow up, however, the influence of the father smoking seems to be similar in all population groups. It seems that a higher percentage of young adults started smoking at an early age and there is a decrease in smoking initiation at older ages in all ethnic groups.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9779 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

Despite the popularity of hypnotherapy for smoking cessation, the efficacy of this method is unclear. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of a single-session of group hypnotherapy for smoking cessation compared to relaxation in Swiss adult smokers.
Methods:
This was a cluster-randomised, parallel-group, controlled trial. A single session of hypnosis or relaxation for smoking cessation was delivered to groups of smokers (median size = 11). Participants were 223 smokers consuming ≥ 5 cigarettes per day, willing to quit and not using cessation aids (47.1% females, M = 37.5 years
[SD = 11.8], 86.1% Swiss). Nicotine withdrawal, smoking abstinence self-efficacy, and adverse reactions were assessed at a 2-week follow-up. The main outcome, self-reported 30-day point prevalence of smoking abstinence, was assessed at a 6-month follow up. Abstinence was validated through salivary analysis. Secondary outcomes included number of cigarettes smoked per day, smoking abstinence self-efficacy, and nicotine withdrawal.
Results:
At the 6-month follow up, 14.7% in the hypnosis group and 17.8% in the relaxation group were abstinent. The intervention had no effect on smoking status (p = .73) or on the number of cigarettes smoked per day (p = .56). Smoking abstinence self-efficacy did not differ between the interventions (p = .14) at the 2-week follow-up, but non-smokers in the hypnosis group experienced reduced withdrawal (p = .02). Both interventions produced few adverse reactions (p = .81).
Conclusions:
A single session of group hypnotherapy does not appear to be more effective for smoking cessation than a group relaxation session.

Résumé : This comprehensive research paper investigates the impacts of electronic cigarettes on public health, focusing on young adults. It examines both the short-term and long-term health effects of electronic cigarette use, exploring potential health risks and benefits, as well as the influence of electronic cigarette marketing on public health. The study uses a combination of literature review, questionnaires, surveys, and interviews with e-cigarette users and healthcare professionals. Findings suggest that while e-cigarettes might be less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they are not risk-free and are associated with various health issues such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems, and potential addiction. The paper highlights the significant role of marketing in promoting e-cigarette use among young adults and raises concerns about e-cigarettes as a gateway to tobacco use. Recommendations focus on regulating e-cigarette marketing, implementing age restrictions, conducting further research, and increasing awareness, especially among young adults. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on e-cigarettes and aims to inform public health policy and practice. [TABAC] étudeMots-clés : biomarqueures inflamatoires Index. décimale : TA 3.2.2 Morbidité Résumé : Context
There has been a global increase in the use of electronic cigarettes (EC). However, to our knowledge, no review has summarized or categorized changes in inflammatory biomarkers after EC use in the extant literature.
Objective
To evaluate changes in general, cardiopulmonary, and oxidative stress-related inflammatory biomarkers in healthy adults who use ECs.
Methods
A scoping review was conducted according to the Arksey and O'Malley framework. PubMed and MEDLINE (Ovid) databases were used for our search. After initial pilot searches and discussions, we performed a final search with medical subject headings and plain language terms related to inflammation, biomarkers, ECs, and adult humans. All full-text articles, gray literature, and primary studies dating from the inception of the searched databases to the present were included. Studies of human participants with known confounding medical histories were excluded.
Results
Thirty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. After short-term (<1 month) use, ECs containing nicotine moderately increased cardiovascular (CV) and oxidative stress markers of inflammation. Of all reported results, 50% of CV biomarkers were increased, and 64% of oxidative stress markers were increased. After long-term (>1 month) use, ECs containing nicotine produced mixed results. Two commonly measured biomarkers in this group, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), were elevated in 75% and 60% of measured instances, respectively.
Conclusion
The results of studies evaluated in our scoping review suggested that short-term use of nicotine-containing ECs may result in increased CV and oxidative stress inflammation, contributing to potential CV or neurologic disease development. The results of studies evaluated in our scoping review also suggested that long-term use of nicotine-containing ECs resulted in no significant changes in general inflammatory biomarker levels. A rigorous systematic review and meta-analysis is necessary to corroborate our findings and to determine the effect of long-term EC use on MMP-9 and IL-6 levels.
