PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship of arterial stiffness (AS) and body composition among college aged e-cigarette smokers and non-smokers.
METHODS: Eighty-four participants [19.8±2.41 y.o.; females (n=74); males (n=10)], completed a questionnaire, DEXA scan, and an AS assessment. The questionnaire consisted of demographic and smoking questions. The DEXA scan, a three-compartment model, analyzed the participants fat mass (FM), lean mass (LM), and bone mineral content/density (BMC, BMD). The assessment of AS was conducted using the SphygmoCor XCEL device which measured pulse wave analysis (PWA) and pulse wave velocity (PWV). PWA consisted of brachial and central
blood pressure (BBP, CBP), resting heart rate (RHR), and augmentation index (AIx). PWV consisted of a measurement of AS. Prior to all measurements, participants fasted and refrained from caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine for at least six hours. E-cigarette smoking status, body composition metrics, PWA, and PWV parameters were analyzed using MS Excel and Jamovi.
RESULTS: An interaction effect (p=0.037) was observed between body fat percentage and smoking status.Specifcally, there was a statistical signifcance (p=0.044) between e-cigarette smokers with high FM and non?smokers with high FM. There were trends indicating that e-cigarette smokers (PWV=5.57m/s) have higher PWV values than non-smokers (PWV=5.41m/s), however, no signifcant differences were found (p=0.207). Additionally, BBP, CBP, RHR, and AIx were not statistically signifcant.
CONCLUSION: PWV values were higher in e-cigarette smokers with high body fat than non-smokers with high body
fat. Furthermore, a higher percentage of body fat and e-cigarette use can lead to stiffer arteries in university
students, potentially affecting health.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10140 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !
