Methods: A cross-sectional national survey of a random sample of 6,021 Israeli residents over the age of 21 were interviewed by telephone. The sample consisted of 4248 Jews, 858 Arabs and 915 immigrants, 856 of them were from the former Soviet Union.
Results: Compared to the Jewish population the Jews who immigrated from the former Soviet Union began smoking at an earlier age and the Arabs started smoking at an older age. The young respondents in all ethnic groups reported starting to smoke at a younger age compared to the older respondents, and there was a decrease in smoking initiation at an older age. Father smoking during childhood predicted earlier age of smoking initiation but not mother or sibling smoking, significantly among Jews and immigrants and non-significantly among Arabs.
Conclusions: Age of smoking initiation is dependent on the ethnic background in which the smokers grow up, however, the influence of the father smoking seems to be similar in all population groups. It seems that a higher percentage of young adults started smoking at an early age and there is a decrease in smoking initiation at older ages in all ethnic groups.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9779 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

Despite the popularity of hypnotherapy for smoking cessation, the efficacy of this method is unclear. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of a single-session of group hypnotherapy for smoking cessation compared to relaxation in Swiss adult smokers.
Methods:
This was a cluster-randomised, parallel-group, controlled trial. A single session of hypnosis or relaxation for smoking cessation was delivered to groups of smokers (median size = 11). Participants were 223 smokers consuming ≥ 5 cigarettes per day, willing to quit and not using cessation aids (47.1% females, M = 37.5 years
[SD = 11.8], 86.1% Swiss). Nicotine withdrawal, smoking abstinence self-efficacy, and adverse reactions were assessed at a 2-week follow-up. The main outcome, self-reported 30-day point prevalence of smoking abstinence, was assessed at a 6-month follow up. Abstinence was validated through salivary analysis. Secondary outcomes included number of cigarettes smoked per day, smoking abstinence self-efficacy, and nicotine withdrawal.
Results:
At the 6-month follow up, 14.7% in the hypnosis group and 17.8% in the relaxation group were abstinent. The intervention had no effect on smoking status (p = .73) or on the number of cigarettes smoked per day (p = .56). Smoking abstinence self-efficacy did not differ between the interventions (p = .14) at the 2-week follow-up, but non-smokers in the hypnosis group experienced reduced withdrawal (p = .02). Both interventions produced few adverse reactions (p = .81).
Conclusions:
A single session of group hypnotherapy does not appear to be more effective for smoking cessation than a group relaxation session.

The deleterious health effects of tobacco smoking on mental health and other components of overall wellbeing have been well documented. Though the side effects of electronic cigarettes (ECs) need further investigation, ECs are widely gaining popularity and are chiefly marketed as a safer alternative to conventional cigarette smoking. This study assessed the predictors of
electronic cigarette use as well as its association with mental health among residents of Lagos state, Nigeria.
METHODS
This was a cross-sectional study which employed the use of a validated interviewer-administered questionnaire, among participants aged ≥18 years. The survey had six sections: sociodemographic information, smoking and lifestyle characteristics, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), knowledge and attitude about e-cigarettes, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done using sociodemographic variables and clinical variables, to identify factors associated with poor knowledge, negative attitude, and predictors of e-cigarette use. A p<0.05 was considered significant.
RESULTS
Data from 898 participants were analyzed; the respondents were predominantly male (65.1%) and the mean age was 33.00 ± 18.38 years. A total of 117 persons (13.1%) were electronic cigarette (EC) users, and the mean duration of EC use was 11.99 ±14.25 months. Amongst EC users, the factors associated with use were socializing (30.8%) and conventional tobacco smoking cessation (15.4%). The majority (56.2%) of the study participants had good knowledge of ECs while 52.9% had a negative attitude. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between poor knowledge and negative attitude about ECs use, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and susceptibility to smoking. Depression was also a strong predictor of e-cigarette use.
CONCLUSIONS
This study found that cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes and depression were strong predictors of EC use. Policymakers in Nigeria should consider forging policies which aim at ensuring correct information dissemination on ECs in the media, and discourage the use of ECs by social vapers.

Conclusion :

Few studies have examined the perceptions of risk of LCC smoking among cigarette smokers, which is important for expanding regulatory policies and developing prevention programs. We examined current cigarette smokers’ perceived harm of LCC smoking, and determined whether these perceptions were associated with susceptibility and intention to continue smoking LCCs.
Methods: Data were from the 2014 Tobacco Products and Risk Perceptions Survey of a probability sample of 5717 US adults. Data were analyzed for a subsample of 1191 current cigarette smokers who were stratified into three groups: 1) dual current cigarette smokers who had ever used LCCs, 2) current smokers susceptible to LCC smoking, and 3) current smokers who were not susceptible to LCC smoking.
Results:
Overall, 47.2% of participants were dual smokers, 12.7% were susceptible to LCC smoking, and 40.1% were not susceptible. Perceptions of risk of LCCs varied across the groups. Dual smokers were more likely to perceive that daily LCC smoking is ‘very risky’ (OR = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.08, 2.41) while occasional LCC smoking is only ‘somewhat risky’ (OR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.02, 2.87). Of the dual smokers, 20.7% intended to continue smoking LCCs in the future. Perceptions of addiction and risk of daily LCC smoking significantly predicted intention to continue LCC smoking. Addiction perceptions also significantly predicted susceptibility to initiate LCC smoking.
Conclusions:
Perceptions about harms from and addiction to LCCs could predict future LCC smoking. Health communication campaigns need to address the harms of LCCs.
Implications
Our data suggest that perceptions of risk about the addictiveness of LCCs and frequency of use are important determinants of the LCC smoking susceptibility among some cigarette smokers and intended continued use among cigarette smokers with a history of LCC use. Health communication campaigns should address misperceptions related to LCCs.En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1093/ntr/ntw244 Format de la ressource électronique : Article en ligne Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9704 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

[TABAC] tabagisme:risque:perception du risqueIndex. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : More brands are using tobacco-free nicotine (TFN) in electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and these products are becoming increasingly popular. The term TFN and claims about its properties can mislead consumers about the harms and addictiveness of TFN e-cigarettes, which may increase initiation of these products among non-smokers or influence current smokers’decisions to adopt TFN e-cigarettes as a harm reduction measure.
Methods
We conducted an observational, cross-sectional survey of 777 adolesc aged 13 to 17 and 655 current adult cigarette smokers residing in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont about their TFN e-cigarette awareness, use, perceptions, and susceptibility. We examined the association between prior awareness of TFN and use, perceptions, and susceptibility.
Results
One-third of adolescents and adults reported being aware of TFN. TFN e-cigarette use was less common than tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) e-cigarette use among adolescents (8.9%vs. 30.5%) and adults (21.1% vs. 79.4%). Compared to unaware adolescents, adolescents who were aware of TFN more frequently reported being more likely to use TFN compared to TDN ecigarettes and that TFN e-cigarettes are more addictive than those containing TDN.
