[TABAC] tabagisme:tabagisme actif:fumeurIndex. décimale : TA 6.3.5 Programmes de sevrage menés par les professionnels de santé Résumé : Fifty four percent of United States high school students have tried some form of tobacco and 23% report regular tobacco use. Over half of adolescent smokers have tried to quit within the past year, but most were unsuccessful. This suggests youth have a high level of interest in quitting but may need additional help and support in maintaining their motivation to quit. The Tobacco Dependence Program at UMDNJ- School of Public Health developed the school-based Youth Quit2Win Program designed to educate adolescent smokers about tobacco, and increase motivation to quit. This chapter summarizes the development of this youth smoking education and cessation program and presents preliminary outcomes. Over three academic years from 2003-2006, 327 adolescents participated in the program. Each year the program was modified based on the previous year’s experiences and feedback from both students and school staff. The 10-session (8 week) group format appears to be suitable for school staff to run, and successful in helping adolescents to maintain their motivation to reduce or quit smoking. [TABAC] sevrage tabagique:méthode de sevrage:méthode individuelle:application mobileIndex. décimale : TA 6.2 Méthodes individuelles Résumé : Background
While most young people who smoke want to quit, few access cessation support services. Mobile phone–based cessation programs are ideal for young people: mobile phones are the most common means of peer communication, and messages can be delivered in an anonymous manner, anywhere, anytime. Following the success of our text messaging smoking cessation program, we developed an innovative multimedia mobile phone smoking cessation intervention.
Objective
The aim of the study was to develop and pilot test a youth-oriented multimedia smoking cessation intervention delivered solely by mobile phone.
Methods
Development included creating content and building the technology platform. Content development was overseen by an expert group who advised on youth development principles, observational learning (from social cognitive theory), effective smoking cessation interventions, and social marketing. Young people participated in three content development phases (consultation via focus groups and an online survey, content pre-testing, and selection of role models). Video and text messages were then developed, incorporating the findings from this research. Information technology systems were established to support the delivery of the multimedia messages by mobile phone. A pilot study using an abbreviated 4-week program of video and text content tested the reliability of the systems and the acceptability of the intervention.
Results
Approximately 180 young people participated in the consultation phase. There was a high priority placed on music for relaxation (75%) and an interest in interacting with others in the program (40% would read messages, 36% would read a blog). Findings from the pre-testing phase (n = 41) included the importance of selecting “real” and “honest” role models with believable stories, and an interest in animations (37%). Of the 15 participants who took part in the pilot study, 13 (87%) were available for follow-up interviews at 4 weeks: 12 participants liked the program or liked it most of the time and found the role model to be believable; 7 liked the role model video messages (5 were unsure); 8 used the extra assistance for cravings; and 9 were happy with two messages per day. Nine participants (60%) stopped smoking during the program. Some technical challenges were encountered during the pilot study.
Conclusions
A multimedia mobile phone smoking cessation program is technically feasible, and the content developed is appropriate for this medium and is acceptable to our target population. These results have informed the design of a 6-month intervention currently being evaluated for its effectiveness in increasing smoking cessation rates in young people.

[TABAC] prévention:campagne:campagne médiatiqueIndex. décimale : TA 5.4 Prévention et médias Résumé : News coverage is associated with a variety of health behaviors, but studies have yet to assess the indirect effects of news coverage generated by a health promotion campaign. The Florida Tobacco Control Program (FTCP), a youth-led marketing and grassroots campaign launched in Florida in 1998, provides the opportunity to examine the effects of program-related newspaper coverage on youth smoking behavior. Articles were collected from Florida daily newspapers, content analyzed to identify the prevalence of topic-specific coverage, and merged by county and year to the Florida Youth Tobacco Survey, a statewide, representative survey of Florida middle school and high school students administered between 1998 and 2002. Trend comparisons and logistic regression models, controlling for alternate explanations, show that FTCP newspaper coverage (particularly coverage of youth advocacy efforts) contributed to observed declines in current smoking. Newspaper coverage of health communication campaigns may represent a meaningful, indirect source of campaign effects. Participants: Data for this study came from a prospective cohort of undergraduate students at a large Midwestern university from 2018 to 2019.
Methods: Among participants who had ever tried a JUUL (N = 411), univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to test the associations between use frequency (past 30-day use) and quantity (time to finish a pod) and nicotine dependence at follow up.
Results: In the multivariable models, both frequency of use and quantity of use were associated with subsequent nicotine dependence, based on most indicators of dependence.
Conclusions: As salt-based nicotine is now present in the most popular e-cigarette brands used by young people, such findings inform our contemporary understanding of e-cigarettes’ addictive potential and can help inform campus-based interventions.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10177 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

[TABAC] tabagisme:tabagisme actifIndex. décimale : TA 5.1 Théorie Résumé : The number of children and young people who consume smokeless nicotine products has increased considerably in the past 5-10 years. Today, children and young people are exposed
to a growing selection of nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, pouches, Swedish snus and chewing tobacco among others. The ample selection of available nicotine products in conjunction with their low price compared with cigarettes, the taste additives used and a packing that appeals to children and young people may be attractive to these groups and contribute to their rising popularity.
In view of the increasing consumption of this addictive drug among children and young people, the National Centre for Health Promotion and Prevention perceives that with this report we meet a need to present current research-based knowledge about the consequences of nicotine consumption for the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Additionally, the report summarises knowledge about tobacco prevention with the aim of strengthening the decision basis for preventive measures targeting nicotine consumption.
Prevalence of nicotine products
In Denmark, around one in every three (31%) children and young people aged 15-29 years consume some type of nicotine products daily or occasionally. Excluding consumption of cigarettes
from the figures, 14.7% of children and young people consume nicotine products. In other words, around half of the children and young people who consume nicotine products only use other nicotine products than cigarettes. Among the smoke-free nicotine products, the more prevalent ones are Swedish snus and nicotine pouches.
Health risks
Among the harmful effects of nicotine for children and young people’s health, the effect on the development of the brain is particularly worrying. The human brain is not fully developed until around 25-30 years of age, and use of nicotine at a young age has various negative effects on the development of the brain.
Dependence and addiction: Nicotine is an appealing substance because it has an energizing effect and elevates mood. Furthermore, it is one of the most addictive drugs known.
Gateway effect: Based on current research originating from human and animal studies, The Working Group assesses that moderate to strong evidence supports that nicotine increases
the likelihood of becoming addicted to cigarettes and drugs in general. Thus, nicotine seems to
have a so-called ‘gateway’ effect.
