The term TFN and claims about its properties can mislead consumers about the harms and addictiveness of TFN e-cigarettes, which may increase initiation of these products among non-smokers or influence current smokers’decisions to adopt TFN e-cigarettes as a harm reduction measure.
Methods
We conducted an observational, cross-sectional survey of 777 adolesc aged 13 to 17 and 655 current adult cigarette smokers residing in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont about their TFN e-cigarette awareness, use, perceptions, and susceptibility. We examined the association between prior awareness of TFN and use, perceptions, and susceptibility.
Results
One-third of adolescents and adults reported being aware of TFN. TFN e-cigarette use was less common than tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) e-cigarette use among adolescents (8.9%vs. 30.5%) and adults (21.1% vs. 79.4%). Compared to unaware adolescents, adolescents who were aware of TFN more frequently reported being more likely to use TFN compared to TDN ecigarettes and that TFN e-cigarettes are more addictive than those containing TDN. Background Tobacco use is an important risk factor for non-communicable diseases worldwide. However, the global extent and prevalence of tobacco use in adolescents is poorly described. Using previously collected survey data, we aimed to assess tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure in young adolescents aged 12–15 years in 68 low-income and middle-income countries.
Methods
We used data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (2006–13) and the China Global Tobacco Youth Survey (2013), which are school-based surveys of young adolescents aged 12–15 years that assess health behaviours using a standardised, anonymous, self-reported questionnaire. We calculated the prevalence of current
tobacco use and exposure to second-hand smoke in young adolescents from 68 low-income and middle-income countries that collected these data in the surveys. We used a multilevel model to estimate the association between parental tobacco use, second-hand smoke, and adolescent tobacco use, adjusting for sex, age, school, school class,
country’s purchasing power parity, smoking initiation age, national prevalence of tobacco use among adults, year the WHO FCTC was ratifi ed for each country, proxy of socioeconomic status, and survey year.
Findings
The mean prevalence of current tobacco use was 13·6%, ranging from 2·8% in Tajikistan to 44·7% in Samoa. In most countries, the prevalence of tobacco use was higher for boys than girls, and higher for adolescents aged 14–15 years than for those aged 12–13 years. The overall prevalence of second-hand smoke exposure was 55·9%,
ranging from 16·4% in Tajikistan to 85·4% in Indonesia. Parental tobacco use (as reported by the young adolescents), especially maternal use, was associated with tobacco use in young adolescents (odds ratio 2·06, 95% CI 1·93–2·19, for maternal and 1·29, 1·23–1·35 for paternal use). Second-hand smoke exposure was also a risk factor for young adolescents’ tobacco use (2·56, 2·43–2·69). However, the prevalence of tobacco use was not associated with a country’s purchasing power parity.
Interpretation Tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure were frequent among young adolescents aged 12–15 years in low-income and middle-income countries. Parental tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure were strongly associated with young adolescents’ tobacco use. The data emphasise the need to strengthen tobacco

[TABAC] tabagisme:tabagisme actif:tabagisme adolescentIndex. décimale : TA 8.8 Publicité Résumé : Telephone interviews were conducted with more than 900 adolescents aged 12 to 18 as part of a multimillion dollar, statewide, antitobacco advertising campaign. The interviews addressed two primary questions: (1) Do counter-advertising campaign attitudes directly affect antismoking beliefs and intent in a manner similar to those of conventional advertisements? and (2) Can advertising campaign attitudes have a stronger effect on beliefs and intent for adolescents with prior smoking behavior and for adolescents exposed to social influence (i.e., friends, siblings, or adult smoker in the home)? The authors' findings show that advertising campaign attitudes, prior trial behavior, and social influence all directly affect antismoking beliefs and that advertising campaign attitudes interact with prior trial behavior to strengthen antismoking beliefs. The results indicate that attitudes related to the campaign, prior trial behavior, and social influence directly influence intent, and advertising campaign attitudes interact with social influence and prior trial behavior to attenuate adolescent intent to smoke. In addition, the effect of advertising campaign attitudes in attenuating social influence and prior trial behavior effects on adolescent intent to smoke persists even when the authors account for strongly held beliefs about smoking. The authors discuss implications for countermarketing communications and the design and understanding of future antismoking campaigns.

Résumé : In the United States, 18.6% of college students between 19-and 22-years old report e-cigarette use in the last 30 days. Information regarding ecigarette
use and perceptions in this age group may assist in understanding how to decrease initiation of e-cigarettes in a population that may
otherwise not use nicotine. The purpose of this survey was to determine current e-cigarette use and how e-cigarette use history relates to a college
student’s perceptions of health risks associated with e-cigarettes. A 33-item questionnaire was sent to students at a Midwestern university in Fall
2018. Overall, 3754 students completed the questionnaire. More than half of the respondents (55.2%) had used e-cigarettes and 23.2% identified as
current users of e-cigarettes. Current e-cigarette users were more likely to agree that e-cigarettes are a safe and effective option to quit smoking,
while never users were more likely to disagree (safe P < .001, effective P < .001). Current users were less likely to agree that e-cigarettes may harm a
person’s overall health than never users (P < .001). Young adults continue to be frequent users of e-cigarettes. There are significant differences in
perceptions of e-cigarettes associated with use history. Additional research is needed to see how perceptions and use of e-cigarettes have
changed considering lung injury reports and increased regulations in the U.S.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9830 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !
