Motivational interviewing in health care / Stephen Rollnick (2008)
Titre : Motivational interviewing in health care : helping patients change behavior Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stephen Rollnick ; William R. Miller ; Christopher Butler Editeur : New York : Guilford Press Année de publication : 2008 Importance : xiv, 210 p. Présentation : ill. [TABAC] sevrage tabagique:méthode de sevrage:méthode individuelle:approche psychologique:entretien motivationnelIndex. décimale : TA 6.2.2 Approche psychologique (y compris entretien motivationnel) Résumé : Motivational Interviewing in Health Care: Helping Patients Change Behavior focuses on health care professionals who work with populations faced with behavioral changes. The 180-page book is easy to read and composed of 3 parts. Part 1 describes the principles and evidence of motivational interviewing and how it appropriately fits in the health professional's approach to patient care. Many patients have been encouraged to incorporate lifestyle modifications and behaviors to prevent disease complications, alleviate symptoms, and prolong and improve quality of life. Health care professionals need empathy when interacting with patients and must identify barriers that affect a patient's ability to comply with therapy, including making behavioral changes. Part 2 describes the core skills of motivational interviewing: asking, listening, and informing. Pharmacists receive training for these essential components of communication skill. Motivational interviewing can be used to empower patients to actively participate in making the best decisions about their health and treatment. Part 3 describes integration and implementation of motivational interviewing in practice with cases and scenarios. This section may present some challenges as patients and pharmacists do not always interact with each other as portrayed in the book. The sample questions within the chapters are helpful when incorporating motivational interviewing techniques with patient counseling and education.
Perhaps the most useful sections of the book are the 2 appendices. Both provide extensive bibliographies of additional resources on motivational interviewing training (Appendix A) and of various populations and disease states where motivational interviewing can be used (Appendix B). There is also an index to key terms within the book.
The book could be used as a textbook or reference for an introductory course on motivational interviewing, although some of the cases and scenarios might need to be revised to fit the knowledge level of the students. The important point to learn about motivational interviewing is how to recognize patterns or styles of communication between health care professionals and patients, and then apply them to practice.

Population-based smoking cessation in women post-partum / J.R. Thyrian (2008)

[TABAC] tabagisme:risque:facteur associé:grossesseIndex. décimale : TA 6.2.2 Approche psychologique (y compris entretien motivationnel) Résumé : AIMS:
quantitative description of adherence to motivational interviewing (MI) in smoking cessation sessions; and examination of the relationships between client characteristics and adherence to MI, and between adherence to MI and future smoking status.
METHODS:
84 sessions were conducted during a randomised controlled trial to test the effectiveness of a population-based smoking intervention in women during the postpartum period. Demographic and behaviour-related variables were included in a logistic regression to predict adherence to MI.
MEASUREMENTS:
adherence was measured using the MI Treatment Integrity Scale.
FINDINGS:
38.1% of sessions showed good adherence to MI. Receiving a good MI session was not related to any demographic or behavioural variables. The relationship between adherence and intervention outcome after six months was not statistically significant (chi(2)=0.355, p=0.551).
CONCLUSIONS:
the smoking cessation sessions examined in this study failed to adhere to MI. There was no relationship between adherence to MI and behavioural outcome six months after the intervention, indicating that women who smoke post partum may be a high-risk group for whom specific smoking cessation interventions need to be developed.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=7497 Exemplaires (1)

This article reviews the research support for Motivational interviewing (MI) so that practitioners can make informed decisions about the value and applicability of MI in their clinical work. We highlight the evidence from the three published meta-analyses of MI and a recent meta-analysis that we completed. MI is significantly (10%-20%) more effective than no treatment and generally equal to other viable treatments for a wide variety of problems ranging from substance use (alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drugs) to reducing risky behaviors and increasing client engagement in treatment. Although most client-related variables are unrelated to outcomes (e.g., age, gender, severity), some decisions about treatment format (e.g., individual vs. group) are important. For example, relying solely on group-delivered MI appears to be less effective than one-on-one MI, whereas delivering MI with problem feedback is likely to generate better outcomes for some problems than MI alone.
