Few studies have been conducted on the effects of smoking bans on cardiac health. We evaluated changes in the frequency of acute coronary events in Rome, Italy, after the introduction of legislation that banned smoking in all indoor public places in January 2005.
Methods and Results— We analyzed acute coronary events (out-of-hospital deaths and hospital admissions) between 2000 and 2005 in city residents 35 to 84 years of age. We computed annual standardized rates and estimated rate ratios by comparing the data from prelegislation (2000–2004) and postlegislation (2005) periods. We took into account several time-related potential confounders, including particulate matter (PM10) air pollution, temperature, influenza epidemics, time trends, and total hospitalization rates. The reduction in acute coronary events was statistically significant in 35- to 64-year-olds (11.2%, 95% CI 6.9% to 15.3%) and in 65- to 74-year-olds (7.9%, 95% CI 3.4% to 12.2%) after the smoking ban. No evidence was found of an effect among the very elderly. The reduction tended to be greater in men and among lower socioeconomic groups.
Conclusions— We found a statistically significant reduction in acute coronary events in the adult population after the smoking ban. The size of the effect was consistent with the pollution reduction observed in indoor public places and with the known health effects of passive smoking. The results affirm that public interventions that prohibit smoking can have enormous public health implicationsPermalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8088 Exemplaires (1)

E-cigarettes, also referred to as electronic cigarettes, are gaining popularity as an alternative to tobacco use. Although their use has significantly increased recently, there is still much debate over their effectiveness and safety as smoking cessation aids.
Objective:
This review paper’s objective is to offer an inclusive evaluation of the body of research about the impact of ecigarettes on the oral microbiome and oral health.
Methodology: Data was extracted from PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus to compile scientific evidence for a narrative review article on the effects of e-cigarettes on the oral microbiome. The investigation was restricted to published research articles from 2001 to 2022, using pre-defined search phrases for e-cigarettes, vaping, quitting smoking, oral microbiota, and oral health.
Results:
The chemicals in e-cigarettes, including nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavorings, and chemical additives, cause a dysbiosis that can lead to a variety of conditions, including dental caries, periodontal diseases, and a variety of mental health issues, such as bone loss, gingival tissue inflammation, and increased plaque accumulation. The chemical toxicity of e-cigarettes, including nicotine and other components present in e-cigarette aerosols, has been implicated in various oral health problems that lead to systemic complications.
Conclusion:
A wide range of oral health sequelae may be associated with e-cigarette use. Future investigation should focus on elucidating the long-term effects of e-cigarette use onPermalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10196 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

Effects of pre- and postnatal exposure to parental smoking on early childhood respiratory health / Siri E. Haberg (11/07/2007)

[TABAC] tabagisme:tabagisme passifIndex. décimale : TA 3.2.2.7 Grossesse et fœtus Résumé : Compelling evidence suggests a causal relation between parental smoking during and after pregnancy and adverse effects on respiratory health in the offspring. The authors' aim in this study was to disentangle the effects of prenatal and postnatal smoking on early childhood respiratory health. Most parents who smoke during pregnancy continue to smoke postpartum, and it is difficult to identify sufficiently large subgroups of children who were exclusively exposed in utero or after birth. This study was based on the first 22,390 children born between 2000 and 2004 in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort, a pregnancy cohort designed to eventually include 100,000 pregnancies. Data were collected through detailed questionnaires administered at various stages of pregnancy, starting in early pregnancy. Because of the large study population, the authors were able to disentangle the preand postnatal effects of parental smoking on wheeze and lower respiratory tract infection in the children's first 18 months of life. They found maternal smoking in pregnancy to be an independent risk factor for wheeze and respiratory infection. Postnatal paternal smoking was also associated with these outcomes, independently of maternal smoking in pregnancy. Index. décimale : TA 3.2.2.5 Pathologies cardiovasculaires Résumé : Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), as alternative nicotine delivery methods, has rapidly increased among youth and adults in recent years. However, cardiovascular safety is an important consideration regarding e-cigarettes usage. e-cigarette emissions, including nicotine, propylene glycol, flavorings, nitrosamine, and metals, might have adverse effects on cardiovascular health. A large body of epidemiological evidence has indicated that e-cigarettes are considered an independent risk factor for increased rates of cardiovascular disease occurrence and death. The incidence and mortality of various types of cardiovascular disease, such as cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension, acute coronary syndromes, and heart failure, have a modest growth in vapers (users of e-cigarettes). Although the underlying biological mechanisms have not been fully understood, studies have validated that oxidative stress, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, hemodynamic effects, and platelet function play important roles in which e-cigarettes work in the human body.
