[TABAC] tabagisme:tabagisme actifIndex. décimale : TA 5.1 Théorie Résumé : The number of children and young people who consume smokeless nicotine products has increased considerably in the past 5-10 years. Today, children and young people are exposed
to a growing selection of nicotine products, including e-cigarettes, pouches, Swedish snus and chewing tobacco among others. The ample selection of available nicotine products in conjunction with their low price compared with cigarettes, the taste additives used and a packing that appeals to children and young people may be attractive to these groups and contribute to their rising popularity.
In view of the increasing consumption of this addictive drug among children and young people, the National Centre for Health Promotion and Prevention perceives that with this report we meet a need to present current research-based knowledge about the consequences of nicotine consumption for the health and wellbeing of children and young people. Additionally, the report summarises knowledge about tobacco prevention with the aim of strengthening the decision basis for preventive measures targeting nicotine consumption.
Prevalence of nicotine products
In Denmark, around one in every three (31%) children and young people aged 15-29 years consume some type of nicotine products daily or occasionally. Excluding consumption of cigarettes
from the figures, 14.7% of children and young people consume nicotine products. In other words, around half of the children and young people who consume nicotine products only use other nicotine products than cigarettes. Among the smoke-free nicotine products, the more prevalent ones are Swedish snus and nicotine pouches.
Health risks
Among the harmful effects of nicotine for children and young people’s health, the effect on the development of the brain is particularly worrying. The human brain is not fully developed until around 25-30 years of age, and use of nicotine at a young age has various negative effects on the development of the brain.
Dependence and addiction: Nicotine is an appealing substance because it has an energizing effect and elevates mood. Furthermore, it is one of the most addictive drugs known.
Gateway effect: Based on current research originating from human and animal studies, The Working Group assesses that moderate to strong evidence supports that nicotine increases
the likelihood of becoming addicted to cigarettes and drugs in general. Thus, nicotine seems to
have a so-called ‘gateway’ effect.

This study explores the personality traits linked to vape use, and associations between vaping and chronotype, sleep quality, and mental health, among young adults. (2)
Methods: 316 participants, aged 18–25, completed measurements of mindfulness, rumination, self-compassion, anxiety/depression, chronotype, and sleep quality. (3)
Results: the vape user group scored significantly lower on mindfulness, higher on rumination, and lower on self-compassion. Vape users were more likely to be evening types and had significantly lower sleep quality and higher anxiety symptoms, as well as higher alcohol use and loneliness (at trend) (4)
Conclusions: These novel findings enhance our understanding of what might predispose young adults to vaping and the potential impact on their mental health and sleep
quality. Findings point to specific cognitive/personality traits as vaping risk factors, which could inform intervention strategies.

The deleterious health effects of tobacco smoking on mental health and other components of overall wellbeing have been well documented. Though the side effects of electronic cigarettes (ECs) need further investigation, ECs are widely gaining popularity and are chiefly marketed as a safer alternative to conventional cigarette smoking. This study assessed the predictors of
electronic cigarette use as well as its association with mental health among residents of Lagos state, Nigeria.
METHODS
This was a cross-sectional study which employed the use of a validated interviewer-administered questionnaire, among participants aged ≥18 years. The survey had six sections: sociodemographic information, smoking and lifestyle characteristics, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), knowledge and attitude about e-cigarettes, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done using sociodemographic variables and clinical variables, to identify factors associated with poor knowledge, negative attitude, and predictors of e-cigarette use. A p<0.05 was considered significant.
RESULTS
Data from 898 participants were analyzed; the respondents were predominantly male (65.1%) and the mean age was 33.00 ± 18.38 years. A total of 117 persons (13.1%) were electronic cigarette (EC) users, and the mean duration of EC use was 11.99 ±14.25 months. Amongst EC users, the factors associated with use were socializing (30.8%) and conventional tobacco smoking cessation (15.4%). The majority (56.2%) of the study participants had good knowledge of ECs while 52.9% had a negative attitude. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between poor knowledge and negative attitude about ECs use, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and susceptibility to smoking. Depression was also a strong predictor of e-cigarette use.
CONCLUSIONS
This study found that cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes and depression were strong predictors of EC use. Policymakers in Nigeria should consider forging policies which aim at ensuring correct information dissemination on ECs in the media, and discourage the use of ECs by social vapers.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10176 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

Little is known about e-cigarette use in French students. Our aims were to estimate the prevalence of e-cigarette experimentation and current e-cigarette use; describe the reasons for using e-cigarettes; explore the vaping experience and identify the profiles of e-cigarette users.
Methods
We used a sequential, explanatory mixed methods design in a sample of French college students. Quantitative data was collected online for a cross-sectional analysis among 1698 students. Two separate analysis based on the thematic analysis and the Grounded Theory were also performed in 20 semi-structured interviews, focusing former and current smokers also current vapers.
Results
The prevalence of e-cigarette experimentation was 39.3% (95% CI: 35.2–44.0) and 5.1% (95% CI: 3.2–8.0) of students were current e-cigarette users. Experimentation was opportunistic while current usage was rational, requiring to acquire a personal electronic device, getting used to its technicality, appreciating its availability, discretion, and learning the practice. In this context, three distinct groups of e-cigarette users were identified, based on assumed identity, tobacco and e-cigarette use, the functions assigned to e-cigarettes, and intentions with regards to vaping in the future.
Conclusion
Despite some limitations mainly related to the participants self-selection, this research showed that while many smokers and former smokers have tried e-cigarettes in this student population, few have continued to use them continuously. Moreover, these current e-cigarette users were a heterogeneous group. revue de la littératureIndex. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : There is ongoing scientific and policy debate about the role e-cigarettes play in tobacco control, with concerns centring around unknown long-term effects, and the potential industry cooption
of harm reduction efforts, including marketing to youths. There is substantial evidence of the influence of conventional cigarette promotion on smoking behaviours in Anglophone countries, and the popularity of social networking sites, as well as the lack of marketing regulations on the commercial promotion of electronic cigarettes online, suggest an urgent need to explore this topic further. This scoping review aims to map the existing evidence related to the influence of e-cigarette commercial promotion on social media on positive perceptions of vaping and vaping behaviours in core Anglophone countries. Searches were conducted in CENTRAL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Embase, Epistemonikos, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Science Citation Index, on the 21st of July 2022. From 1,385 studies, 11 articles were included in the final review, using diverse study designs, including focus groups, content analysis, cross-sectional studies, and experiments.
The studies were primarily based in the U.S. and evidenced the association between the commercial promotion of e-cigarettes on social media with positive perceptions of vaping and vaping behaviours, particularly among young people, addressing diverse themes including celebrities’ sponsorship, e-liquid appeal (including flavours and nicotine levels), users’ engagement with ads, and other marketing strategies. Further, social networking sites commercially promoting e-cigarettes might increase positive attitudes towards vaping and vaping behaviours, particularly among youths. Future research should be conducted in broader settings, incorporate larger and diverse sample sizes, ensure research transparency, cover multiple social networking sites, emphasize ecological validity, and foment longitudinal studies.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10180 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

This is, in part, due to the common opinion that they are “healthier” than tobacco cigarettes or simply “water vapour”. Third-hand e-vapour exposure is the chemical residue left behind from e-cigarette aerosols, which is of concern due to its invisible nature, especially among young children. However, there is limited information surrounding third-hand e-vapour exposure.
This study aimed to investigate the pulmonary effects of sub-chronic third-hand e-vapour exposure in a murine model. BALB/c mice (4 weeks of age) were exposed to a towel containing nicotine free (0 mg) e-vapour, nicotine (18 mg) e-vapour, or no e-vapour (sham) and replaced daily for 4 weeks. At the endpoint, lung function was assessed, and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lungs were collected to measure inflammation and fibrosis. Mice exposed to third-hand e-vapour without nicotine had alveolar enlargement compared to sham exposed controls. Mice exposed to third-hand e-vapour with nicotine had reduced bronchial responsiveness to provocation, increased epithelial thickening in large airways, increased epithelial layers in small airways, alveolar enlargement, and increased small airway collagen deposition, compared to sham exposed controls. In conclusion, our study shows that third-hand e-vapour exposure, particularly in the presence of nicotine, negatively affects the lung health of mice and highlights the need for greater public awareness surrounding the dangers of third-hand exposure to e-cigarette vapour.

The term TFN and claims about its properties can mislead consumers about the harms and addictiveness of TFN e-cigarettes, which may increase initiation of these products among non-smokers or influence current smokers’decisions to adopt TFN e-cigarettes as a harm reduction measure.
Methods
We conducted an observational, cross-sectional survey of 777 adolesc aged 13 to 17 and 655 current adult cigarette smokers residing in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont about their TFN e-cigarette awareness, use, perceptions, and susceptibility. We examined the association between prior awareness of TFN and use, perceptions, and susceptibility.
Results
One-third of adolescents and adults reported being aware of TFN. TFN e-cigarette use was less common than tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) e-cigarette use among adolescents (8.9%vs. 30.5%) and adults (21.1% vs. 79.4%). Compared to unaware adolescents, adolescents who were aware of TFN more frequently reported being more likely to use TFN compared to TDN ecigarettes and that TFN e-cigarettes are more addictive than those containing TDN. [TABAC] législation:taxation
[TABAC] législation:taxation:taxe sur le tabacIndex. décimale : TA 9.3.3 Taxation Résumé : Background and objectives
This research presents an evaluation of the European Commission’s proposals for the reform of taxation of cigars, cigarillos, pipe tobacco, and so-called “novel products”—electronic cigarettes, heated tobacco products (HTP), and nicotine pouches—in the context of the revision of the European Union’s (EU) Tobacco Tax Directive (TTD). It is a companion to a previous study that focused on cigarettes and fine-cut tobacco (FCT). Both this study and its predecessor analyze a draft that circulated unofficially after a postponement in the revision process was announced in late 2022.
The overall objective is to contribute to the evidence base that should inform the policy process. This study first provides an overview of the current situation of the markets for the products under focus and their fiscal treatments. Second, it presents a simulation of the likely effects of the Commission’s plans. This evaluation highlights the opportunity cost of the delay in the launch of the revision plans and also suggests ways to enhance the plans’ strength since the revision plans are crucial to tobacco control policy in the bloc as well as potential future members’ willingness to harmonize their tax systems with those of the EU.
Methods
The analysis is based on a panel database of prices, taxes, market volumes, and sales for the EU member states over the period 2012–2022, which is supplemented with data on several other variables such as population, purchasing power parities, and inflation. The effects of the rules proposed in the draft are simulated by computing the excise yield that they would generate from products selling at representative prices.
Results
Cigarettes and FCT are still the predominant products in the market for tobacco and tobacco-related products in the EU. However, the share of the rest of the products in this market has grown remarkably over the past seven years and is expected to increase further. This trend is driven by the advent and consolidation of novel products.
A simulation of the effects of the Commission’s proposals on the excise yield at currently representative price levels shows little impact on cigarillos, cigars, or pipe tobacco. For novel products, the effects of the proposals are more nuanced. In the case of electronic cigarettes and
2 nicotine pouches, the most tangible impact is the imposition of excise duties in countries where they currently do not apply. On the other hand, for HTP, the impact on excise yields at current prices is noticeable in most countries.
Conclusions
The European Commission’s proposals for the revision of the TTD include the creation of separate tax categories for HTP, liquids for electronic cigarettes, and nicotine pouches. They also include increases in the rates for traditional tobacco products and adjustments for inflation and purchasing power differences across member states. While these are welcome innovations, the proposed architecture of the minimum rates for the products considered here is found lacking from the point of view of tobacco control because the revised TTD would allow their excise tax to be a fraction of the retail selling price, likely leading to the proliferation of cheap brands. The onus would be on member states to close this loophole, which permits industry undervaluation as a strategy to minimize tax burdens.
Perhaps the most important single reason why the EU’s TTD is recognized as a crucial piece of legislation for tobacco control is its potential to create an excise tax floor for tobacco products. This is strongest in the case of cigarettes, for which both a fixed minimum and a relative minimum based on the product’s weighted average price (WAP) must be satisfied. This strength is partly undermined in the case of FCT because the excise tax floor must reach either one or the other minimum rather than both. This limitation also affects the products under focus here. Moreover, if the base for the relative minimum is the brand’s retail price—instead of a measure less vulnerable to manipulation, such as the WAP—the ability of the legislation to set an effective excise floor is severely undermined. Foregoing the chance to close this loophole in this round of revision would be regrettable, especially when the market outlook for the novel products is one of strong growth.

Given the increasing use of e-cigarettes and other nicotine products, it appears essential to clarify this issue. We studied extracts
from cigarette smoke (CSE) and vapor from e-cigarettes (EVE) and heated tobacco (HTE) for their effects on vascular relaxation, endothelial nitric oxide signaling, and the activity of soluble guanylyl cyclase. The average nicotine concentrations of CSE, EVE, and HTE were 164, 800, and 85 μM,
respectively. At a dilution of 1:3, CSE almost entirely inhibited the relaxation of rat aortas and porcine coronary arteries to acetylcholine and bradykinin, respectively, while undiluted EVE, with a 15-fold higher nicotine concentration, had no significant effect. With about 50% inhibition at 1:2 dilution,
the effect of HTE was between CSE and EVE. Neither extract affected endothelium-independent relaxation to an NO donor. At the dilutions tested, CSE was not toxic to cultured endothelial cells but, in contrast to EVE, impaired NO signaling and inhibited NO stimulation of soluble guanylyl cyclase. Our results demonstrate that nicotine does not mediate the impaired endothelium-dependent vascular relaxation caused by smoking.
