Here, we describe a multiple test matrix and
in vitro approach to assess the biological impact of differing e-cigarette activation mechanism (button vs puff-activated) and heating technology (cotton vs ceramic wick). The e-liquids selected for each device contained the same nicotine concentration and flavourings. We tested both e-liquid and aqueous extract of e-liquid aerosol using a high throughput
cytotoxicity and genotoxicity screen. We also conducted whole aerosol assessment both in a reconstituted human airway lung tissue (MucilAir) with associated endpoint assessment
(cytotoxicity, TEER, cilia beat frequency and active area) and an Ames whole aerosol assay with up to 900 consecutive undiluted puffs. Following this testing it is shown that the
biological impact of these devices is similar, taking into consideration the limitations and capturing efficiencies of the different testing matrices. We have contextualised these
responses against previous published reference cigarette data to establish the comparative reduction in response consistent with reduced risk potential of the e-cigarette products
tested in this study as compared to conventional cigarettes.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10187 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

This study provides an overview of five e-cigarette case samples seized from Scottish prisons between May 2022 and July 2023 where the anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) mestanolone and oxandrolone were identified following gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analyses. These e-cigarette samples
represented 2.9% of all samples containing e-cigarette cartridges (n = 170) and 9.4% of all samples found to contain AASs (n = 53) seized during the same time period. The AASs were detected in combination with other drugs, including cocaine, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), SCRAs and nicotine. This represents a new and novel route of administration for AASs.

Methods: A total of 160 participants were divided into four groups according to the type of product used, including non-smokers, users of conventional combustible tobacco (cigarettes), heated tobacco, and electronic, tobacco-free vapor products (e-cigarettes). Buccal mucosa samples were analyzed using the micronucleus cytome assay
to assess cytotoxic and genotoxic damage.
Results: E-cigarette users showed significantly higher values for all tested parameters in the micronucleus test compared to non-smokers (p < 0.05). Similarly, users of tobacco heating products showed an increase in all parameters (p < 0.05), with the exception of the number of cells with micronuclei. Conventional cigarette smokers showed a notable increase in the number of binucleated cells and cells with karyorrhexis and karyolysis (p ≤ 0.05). When assessing the differences between users of traditional combustible tobacco products and non-combustible alternatives, these did not appear to be significant, except for e-cigarette users, who had significantly more cells with condensed chromatin (p ≤ 0.001), while users of tobacco heating products had more pyknotic cells (p ≤ 0.001).
Conclusion: The results of this study underscore the heightened occurrence of cytotoxic and genotoxic damage in users of both conventional combustible tobacco products and non-combustible alternatives compared to non-smokers, emphasizing the detrimental impact of these products on the oral mucosa.

[TABAC] étudeIndex. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : Introduction: Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are novel tobacco products that may appeal to youth. This study explored whether HTP retailer proximity and density to secondary schools were associated with youth use of HTPs in four Canadian provinces.
Methods: An online search between November 2020 and March 2021 identified retailers selling IQOS devices and HEETS (tobacco sticks used in IQOS) within 500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m radius circular buffer zones around high schools (N = 120) participating in the COMPASS study in 2020–2021. Retailer proximity/density data were linked to crosssectional student-level data (N = 40 636 students), and multilevel regression models examined the association between HTP retailer proximity and density and current HTP use, controlling for relevant covariates.
Results: While only 10.0% of schools had at least one retailer selling IQOS devices within 1000 m of the school, 65.0% of schools had at least one retailer selling HEETS. The school a student attended accounted for 23.7% of the variability in the likelihood of currently using an HTP. However, HTP retailer proximity to and density around schools were not significantly associated with the likelihood of students currently using HTPs.
Conclusion: While the school a student attended accounted for a significant amount of variability in HTP use, these findings suggest that students may be obtaining HTPs through other, non-retail sources. Continued monitoring is warranted as HTP use among youth may change.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10181 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

Little is known about e-cigarette use in French students. Our aims were to estimate the prevalence of e-cigarette experimentation and current e-cigarette use; describe the reasons for using e-cigarettes; explore the vaping experience and identify the profiles of e-cigarette users.
Methods
We used a sequential, explanatory mixed methods design in a sample of French college students. Quantitative data was collected online for a cross-sectional analysis among 1698 students. Two separate analysis based on the thematic analysis and the Grounded Theory were also performed in 20 semi-structured interviews, focusing former and current smokers also current vapers.
Results
The prevalence of e-cigarette experimentation was 39.3% (95% CI: 35.2–44.0) and 5.1% (95% CI: 3.2–8.0) of students were current e-cigarette users. Experimentation was opportunistic while current usage was rational, requiring to acquire a personal electronic device, getting used to its technicality, appreciating its availability, discretion, and learning the practice. In this context, three distinct groups of e-cigarette users were identified, based on assumed identity, tobacco and e-cigarette use, the functions assigned to e-cigarettes, and intentions with regards to vaping in the future.
Conclusion
Despite some limitations mainly related to the participants self-selection, this research showed that while many smokers and former smokers have tried e-cigarettes in this student population, few have continued to use them continuously. Moreover, these current e-cigarette users were a heterogeneous group. Longitudinal studies are needed in young adultPermalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10199 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

revue de la littératureIndex. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : There is ongoing scientific and policy debate about the role e-cigarettes play in tobacco control, with concerns centring around unknown long-term effects, and the potential industry cooption
of harm reduction efforts, including marketing to youths. There is substantial evidence of the influence of conventional cigarette promotion on smoking behaviours in Anglophone countries, and the popularity of social networking sites, as well as the lack of marketing regulations on the commercial promotion of electronic cigarettes online, suggest an urgent need to explore this topic further. This scoping review aims to map the existing evidence related to the influence of e-cigarette commercial promotion on social media on positive perceptions of vaping and vaping behaviours in core Anglophone countries. Searches were conducted in CENTRAL, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Embase, Epistemonikos, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Science Citation Index, on the 21st of July 2022. From 1,385 studies, 11 articles were included in the final review, using diverse study designs, including focus groups, content analysis, cross-sectional studies, and experiments.
The studies were primarily based in the U.S. and evidenced the association between the commercial promotion of e-cigarettes on social media with positive perceptions of vaping and vaping behaviours, particularly among young people, addressing diverse themes including celebrities’ sponsorship, e-liquid appeal (including flavours and nicotine levels), users’ engagement with ads, and other marketing strategies. Further, social networking sites commercially promoting e-cigarettes might increase positive attitudes towards vaping and vaping behaviours, particularly among youths. Future research should be conducted in broader settings, incorporate larger and diverse sample sizes, ensure research transparency, cover multiple social networking sites, emphasize ecological validity, and foment longitudinal studies.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10180 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

The term TFN and claims about its properties can mislead consumers about the harms and addictiveness of TFN e-cigarettes, which may increase initiation of these products among non-smokers or influence current smokers’decisions to adopt TFN e-cigarettes as a harm reduction measure.
Methods
We conducted an observational, cross-sectional survey of 777 adolesc aged 13 to 17 and 655 current adult cigarette smokers residing in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont about their TFN e-cigarette awareness, use, perceptions, and susceptibility. We examined the association between prior awareness of TFN and use, perceptions, and susceptibility.
Results
One-third of adolescents and adults reported being aware of TFN. TFN e-cigarette use was less common than tobacco-derived nicotine (TDN) e-cigarette use among adolescents (8.9%vs. 30.5%) and adults (21.1% vs. 79.4%). Compared to unaware adolescents, adolescents who were aware of TFN more frequently reported being more likely to use TFN compared to TDN ecigarettes and that TFN e-cigarettes are more addictive than those containing TDN. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are often considered a “safe substitute” for conventional cigarette cessation. The composition of the fluid is not always clearly defined and shows a large variation within brands and manufacturers. More than 80 compounds were detected in liquids and aerosols. E-cigarettes contain nicotine, and the addition of flavorings increases the toxicity of e-cigarette vapour in a significant manner. The heat generated by the e-cigarette leads to the oxidation
and decomposition of its components, eventually forming harmful constituents in the inhaled vapour. The effects of these toxicants on male and female reproduction are well established in conventional cigarette smokers. Although toxins were measured at much lower levels in e-cigarette aerosols compared to smoke from a conventional cigarette, there are concerns about their potential impact on male and female reproduction. The information available was mainly obtained from studies conducted in animal models, and investigations in humans are scarce. However, the effects observed in animal models suggest that caution should be taken when vaping and that more research needs to be conducted to identify its potential adverse effects on fertility. The prevalence of e-cigarette usage is alarming, and warnings should be made about the impact of vaping on reproductive health. This document reviews the data regarding the impact of e-cigarette use on male and female reproductionPermalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9828 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

[TABAC] étudeMots-clés : Pharmacocinétique - e-liquide Index. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : The addition of protonating acids to e-cigarette liquid formulations (e-liquids) enhances nicotine bioavailability in e-cigarette use. However, little is known about the impact of different combinations of protonating acid on nicotine pharmacokinetics. The objectives of this study were to compare pharmacokinetics of nicotine absorption following use of a closed-system e-cigarette, containing e-liquids with two different nicotine levels and with different ratios of three common protonating acids—lactic, benzoic and levulinic. In a randomised, controlled, crossover study, nicotine pharmacokinetics and product liking were assessed for prototype e-liquids used in a Vuse e-cigarette containing either 3.5% or 5% nicotine and varying ratios of lactic, benzoic and/or levulinic acid. During an 8-day confinement period, 32 healthy adult current cigarette smokers/e-cigarette dual users used a single study e-liquid each day during 10-min fixed and ad libitum use periods after overnight nicotine abstinence. For most comparisons, Cmax and AUC 0–60 following both fixed and ad libitum puffing were significantly higher for e-liquids containing 5% nicotine compared with 3.5% nicotine. However, Cmax and AUC 0–60 were not statistically different for 5% nicotine e-liquids containing varying ratios of lactic, levulinic and benzoic acid when compared to an e-liquid containing lactic acid only. Mean scores for product liking were similar for all e-liquid formulations assessed, regardless of nicotine concentration, acid content, and whether the product was used in a fixed or ad libitum puffing regimen. While e-liquid nicotine concentration significantly affected users’ nicotine uptake, the different combinations of benzoic, levulinic and lactic acid in the e-liquids assessed had limited impact on nicotine pharmacokinetics and product liking scores. Grade 12 students (N = 855) of 2020 from nine Australian schools completed a cross-sectional self-report survey. Correlates examined included age, gender, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, parental and family characteristics, truancy, mental health (depression and anxiety), alcohol use and cigarette smoking. Overall, 74% reported that they had never used an e-cigarette or vaped, 12.5% had for flavour-only, and 13.5% had for nicotine vapes. Multinomial adjusted logistic regressions showed that males and teens reporting frequent alcohol or cigarette use had higher odds of vaping. In adolescents who had used an e-cigarette, half had used a nicotine vape. Those who engaged in risky drinking and smoked cigarettes were most likely to also use e-cigarettes, implying that this may be a high-risk group. [TABAC] tabagisme:habitude tabagiqueIndex. décimale : TA 1.1.1 Cigarettes (« normales », électroniques, aromatisées,…) Résumé : Introduction:
Although the relationship between tax and price and youth cigarette use is well established, little is known about these associations and youth e-cigarette use. This research examines U.S. youth sensitivity to changes in e-cigarette prices and tax using standardized measures of e-cigarette taxes and prices.
Methods:
This analysis uses national data on past 30-day use and the number of days using e-cigarettes (i.e., the intensity of use) from the repeat cross-sectional 2015−2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, in combination with inflation-adjusted standardized e-cigarette price and tax data to understand whether changes in e-cigarette price and tax were associated with changes in e-cigarette use. Two-part demand regression models controlling for demographics and e-cigarette restriction policies
were conducted to calculate price and tax elasticities of demand, in addition to $0.50 and $1.00 price and tax increase simulations.
Results: Increased e-cigarette prices and taxes were associated with significant reductions in past 30-day use. Prices were also significantly associated with decreases in the intensity of use. A $0.50 and $1.00 tax increase leads to a 6.3% and 12.2% decrease in past 30-day use and a 4.7% and 9.3% decrease in intensity, respectively. A $0.50 and $1.00 price increase leads to a 4.1% and 8.2% decrease in past 30-day use and a 4.2% and 8.3% decrease in intensity, respectively.
Conclusions: Higher prices and taxes reduce youth current e-cigarette use and days using e-cigarettes. Policies increasing e-cigarette prices, such as excise taxes, can reduce youth current e-cigarette use and days using e-cigarettesPermalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9801 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

Participants: Data for this study came from a prospective cohort of undergraduate students at a large Midwestern university from 2018 to 2019.
Methods: Among participants who had ever tried a JUUL (N = 411), univariate and multivariable logistic regression were used to test the associations between use frequency (past 30-day use) and quantity (time to finish a pod) and nicotine dependence at follow up.
Results: In the multivariable models, both frequency of use and quantity of use were associated with subsequent nicotine dependence, based on most indicators of dependence.
Conclusions: As salt-based nicotine is now present in the most popular e-cigarette brands used by young people, such findings inform our contemporary understanding of e-cigarettes’ addictive potential and can help inform campus-based interventions.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=10177 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !

The deleterious health effects of tobacco smoking on mental health and other components of overall wellbeing have been well documented. Though the side effects of electronic cigarettes (ECs) need further investigation, ECs are widely gaining popularity and are chiefly marketed as a safer alternative to conventional cigarette smoking. This study assessed the predictors of
electronic cigarette use as well as its association with mental health among residents of Lagos state, Nigeria.
METHODS
This was a cross-sectional study which employed the use of a validated interviewer-administered questionnaire, among participants aged ≥18 years. The survey had six sections: sociodemographic information, smoking and lifestyle characteristics, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), knowledge and attitude about e-cigarettes, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was done using sociodemographic variables and clinical variables, to identify factors associated with poor knowledge, negative attitude, and predictors of e-cigarette use. A p<0.05 was considered significant.
RESULTS
Data from 898 participants were analyzed; the respondents were predominantly male (65.1%) and the mean age was 33.00 ± 18.38 years. A total of 117 persons (13.1%) were electronic cigarette (EC) users, and the mean duration of EC use was 11.99 ±14.25 months. Amongst EC users, the factors associated with use were socializing (30.8%) and conventional tobacco smoking cessation (15.4%). The majority (56.2%) of the study participants had good knowledge of ECs while 52.9% had a negative attitude. There was a significant association (p<0.05) between poor knowledge and negative attitude about ECs use, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking, and susceptibility to smoking. Depression was also a strong predictor of e-cigarette use.
CONCLUSIONS
This study found that cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes and depression were strong predictors of EC use. Policymakers in Nigeria should consider forging policies which aim at ensuring correct information dissemination on ECs in the media, and discourage the use of ECs by social vapers.

Résumé : In the United States, 18.6% of college students between 19-and 22-years old report e-cigarette use in the last 30 days. Information regarding ecigarette
use and perceptions in this age group may assist in understanding how to decrease initiation of e-cigarettes in a population that may
otherwise not use nicotine. The purpose of this survey was to determine current e-cigarette use and how e-cigarette use history relates to a college
student’s perceptions of health risks associated with e-cigarettes. A 33-item questionnaire was sent to students at a Midwestern university in Fall
2018. Overall, 3754 students completed the questionnaire. More than half of the respondents (55.2%) had used e-cigarettes and 23.2% identified as
current users of e-cigarettes. Current e-cigarette users were more likely to agree that e-cigarettes are a safe and effective option to quit smoking,
while never users were more likely to disagree (safe P < .001, effective P < .001). Current users were less likely to agree that e-cigarettes may harm a
person’s overall health than never users (P < .001). Young adults continue to be frequent users of e-cigarettes. There are significant differences in
perceptions of e-cigarettes associated with use history. Additional research is needed to see how perceptions and use of e-cigarettes have
changed considering lung injury reports and increased regulations in the U.S.Permalink : https://biblio.fares.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9830 Aucun avis, veuillez vous identifier pour ajouter le vôtre !
